Civil Engineering – Third Cycle

The third-cycle study programme in Civil Engineering consists of five subprogrammes (modules):

Hydraulic Engineering,
Transport Infrastructure,
Geotechnics, and
Organisation, Technology and Management in Civil Engineering.

The third-cycle study programme in Civil Engineering is organised, in terms of workload, in accordance with the Law on Higher Education of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Regulations for third-cycle studies of UKIM.

The study programme consists of two main parts:

Research training and education amounting to 42 ECTS- credits.
Preparation of a doctoral project proposal, research, participation in annual conferences and seminars, mobility, participation in international meetings, and preparation and defence of the doctoral dissertation, amounting to 138 ECTS- credits.

Research Training and Education

The training in research and publishing of results consists of:

Three courses for acquiring generic research knowledge and skills, amounting to 12 ECTS credits, namely:

Research Ethics (3 ECTS);
Methodology of Scientific Research (3 ECTS);
Eден предмет од листа на изборни предмети од третата група предмети за стекнување на генерички знања и вештини за истражување – Универзитетска листа на изборни предмети од трет циклус на студии (6 EKTС).

The education comprises courses from the field and the narrower area of research, amounting to 30 ECTS credits.

The Education courses at the Faculty of Civil Engineering are divided into two groups:

Group A – courses in the fields of mathematics and informatics
Група Б – предмети од потесната област на истражување:
- Group B1 – structures;
- Group B2 – hydraulic engineering;
- Group B3 – traffic engineering;
- Group B4 – geotechnics;
- Group B5 – organisation, technology and management in civil engineering.

Depending on the candidate's needs and in agreement with the mentor, the course in mathematics and informatics may be taken at another unit of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, at another public university, or at universities in Europe and worldwide with which UKIM has concluded bilateral cooperation agreements.

Group C comprises course programmes from the narrower area of research offered in the study programmes of other units of the University, at one of the public universities in North Macedonia, and at universities in Europe and worldwide with which UKIM has concluded bilateral cooperation agreements.

The education amounts to 30 ECTS credits and comprises five courses:

One course from Group A, from the fields of mathematics and informatics;
One course from Group B, from all modules;
Three courses from Group B, from the selected module. One of these courses may be chosen from the narrower area of research offered in the study programmes of other units of the University, at one of the public universities in North Macedonia, and at universities in Europe and worldwide with which UKIM has concluded bilateral cooperation agreements.

The candidate selects the course programmes in agreement with the mentor.

The education is delivered by the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Skopje. Part of the education, at the candidate's choice and with the mentor's consent, may be delivered at another unit of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, at another public university, or at universities in Europe and worldwide with which UKIM has concluded bilateral cooperation agreements.

Taking into account the number of students and with the aim of increasing the quality of teaching, the 458th session of the Teaching and Scientific Council (TSC) decided that one teacher may teach at most two courses in the third cycle of studies in Civil Engineering.

For students from other fields of study, if prior knowledge is required to follow the third-cycle courses, the mentor may propose to the Council for Doctoral Studies that the student take a maximum of two courses from the list of second-cycle courses. If lectures in the selected course are held in the current semester, the student may join them; otherwise, teaching will be delivered through mentorship. The credits from these additional courses will be in addition to the 30 education credits obtained through the third-cycle course programmes.

Активна истражувачка работа и изработка на докторска дисертација

In the second semester, beginning with the preparation of the project proposal for the doctoral thesis, the candidate starts work on the doctoral dissertation, which comprises the following activities:

Независен истражувачки проект за изработка на докторскиот труд под менторство (докторски проект), што содржи истражувачка работа под менторство и поднесување на предлог-докторски проект за изработка на докторски труд и се вреднува со 41 ЕКТС-кредити;
Меѓународна мобилност, најмалку еднонеделен престој, што се вреднува со 6 ЕКТС-кредити;
Предавања и друг вид комуникациски активности, што содржи учество на семинари и конференции, што се вреднува со 18 ЕКТС-кредити;
Објавување во референтни научни публикации и активно учество на меѓународни собири во врска со докторскиот труд, што се вреднува со 27 ЕКТС-кредити;
Изработка и јавна одбрана на докторски труд врз основа на докторски проект, што се вреднува со 46 ЕКТС-кредити.
